Waste Management Sharps Disposal

Waste Management Sharps DisposalIn May 2017, New England MedWaste in Middleton, MA was established under the BioMed Innovations banner. We were empowered to provide an alternative option for collecting, transporting, and processing regulated medical waste. Our state-of-the-art waste processing facility is capable of handling up to 100 tons of Medical and Sharps Waste per day. Let’s look at why it is important to dispose of sharps in particular.

Proper waste management is essential for a healthy and safe environment. Among the different types of waste, sharps are a significant concern for public health and safety. Sharps are objects or devices with sharp points or edges, such as needles, syringes, and lancets, that can puncture or cut the skin. Improper disposal of sharps can lead to injuries, infections, and the spread of diseases. At New England MedWaste, we understand the importance of waste management sharps disposal and the risks of mishandling these hazardous materials.

The Risks of Improper Sharps Disposal

  • Sharps may cause injuries and infections.
  • They can spread disease (such as HIV, Hep B and C)
  • Sharps may harm wildlife and the environment.

Waste management sharps disposal involves a few simple steps that can help prevent injuries and infections. The first step is to use an appropriate sharps container, which is a puncture-resistant and leak-proof container specifically designed for sharps disposal. We provide 43-gallon reusable medical waste containers which are labeled and tracked for each use, up to 600 times.

At New England MedWaste, we follow and maintain OSHA compliance as we handle waste management sharps disposal. Our process follows a high standard for securing and processing regulated medical waste. These standards are evident throughout our process, which looks like this. Our first step is to bring in boxes of medical waste for scanning and weighing. Then we empty the boxes into carts and stage them for processing. The next step is where we use a robotic wash system to decant and sterilize the reusable sharps containers. Our robotic decanter can process. up to 120 containers per hour, while our container washer can process 200 tube per hour. Then the sharps waste is transported into our autoclave where it is sterilized using high temperatures and pressure. Finally, the waste is carted to the compactor. Here it is dumped and compacted before traveling to the waste-to-energy facility.

Proper waste management sharps disposal has many benefits, including protecting public health, reducing the risk of injuries and infections, and protecting the environment. By properly disposing of sharps, we can reduce the risk of needlestick injuries and infections, which are a significant concern for healthcare workers and waste handlers. Proper sharps disposal can also prevent the spread of diseases like HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, which can be transmitted through contaminated sharps. In addition, proper sharps disposal can protect the environment and wildlife. Sharps that are not disposed of properly can harm animals and pollute the environment, leading to contamination of soil and water. By properly disposing of sharps, we can reduce the risks to the environment and protect the natural resources that we rely on.
